The 5 AM Club

So I recently read the 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma, after years of resisting it. In January 2021, I saw the book again after a lunch date with a loved one and I finally got it. The timing seemed perfect as well, I had a challenge getting back to waking up early and my life seemed to be spiraling out of control with unhealthy habits I adapted. After reading this book, I remembered why I am a Robin Sharma fan, here’s a quick review.

The Likes

Our mothers and grandmothers were right about waking up early to get things done, it took this book to finally get it. Waking up with the sun, or just before it arises is a true gem. You get so much done and I am surprisingly more energetic now, than I was when I woke with the sun in my face.

The book incorporates all of You; Your spiritual, physical, mental, and psychological wellbeing. Sometimes we forget this balance, and some books (lowkey) encourage it. Taking care of all of you matters if you really want to successful, and plan to live long enough to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

I also loved that the tips are practical, it’s things you can do that can also be adjusted to your current lifestyle. Eg. The 20/20/20 rule was adjusted to the 60/60/60 rule in my case. I spend 60 minutes meditating, 60 minutes exercising and 60 minutes journaling or learning something new daily. This little adjustment and others make my day more intentional and focused.

The Dislikes

I feel like I’ve read this book before because I’ve read one of his books, the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. The tips on elevating your life are told through stories of the different characters. The Billionaire and the Monk said the same thing in different ways.

I also didn’t like how the book dragged on and on. I only really started to enjoy the book around chapter 8. The practical tips were shared after eight chapters, but I guess this was done to accommodate the storytelling.

All in all, it’s a great read. As with everything else in life, nothing works until you work so it takes practice to see a difference and you will notice a shift when you are consistent. A friend/colleague also read the book and is back on the early morning bus. He says he is loving what it has done for him so far.
