Reflecting on the Highlights of 2023

Can you grasp the fact that we’ve reached the conclusion of 2023? Time seems to have flown by, and while it wasn’t without its hurdles, I choose to express gratitude for being here. Instead of dwelling on the challenges, here are the numerous highlights of 2023.

The Pole Journey

This year, I discovered just how amazing my body is and I realized that she truly has my back. Instead of fixating on reaching the next level, I focused on enjoying the journey, and as a result, I find myself on the verge of being in the advanced level and comfortably doing the splits. One of the exhilarating challenges I took on was the flying pole. As if mastering a regular pole wasn’t demanding enough, the flying pole was a true testament to leveling up my skills.

Another noteworthy milestone was dancing in my pleasers. I can now confidently dance in bold red 8-inch heels. Embarking on the art of erotic dance added another layer of excitement to my journey. Joining the erotic dances has been a sexy and empowering treat.

The 360 – The Media Shop

I experienced a surreal moment when I had the opportunity to present the MSG offerings to my former agency. The full-circle moment occurred when I reminded them of my past declarations – the assurance that one day I would return as a radio presenter to pitch for business. Their belief in my words was evident, and they were genuinely thrilled to witness my prediction come to life. Warm hugs, expressions of gratitude, and a shared sense of accomplishment marked this unforgettable moment.

The Basadi in Music Awards and SA Radio Awards Nominations

My inaugural taste of awards came unexpectedly when I found myself nominated for the Basadi In Music Awards. The surprise nomination had a transformative effect on my profile, it provided an amazing boost. Following a particularly stressful campaign at work, the awards night was delightful. What made it even more special was attending with my man – a shy yet supportive man who contributed to the night’s beauty.

The SA Radio Awards nomination hit differently because I was up against OG’s of the industry. Standing shoulder to shoulder with radio OG’s who have been in the game since before I was born was a validating experience, affirming my place among the greats. The awards night not only celebrated achievements but also offered a fantastic opportunity to network and meet peers face-to-face. And let’s not forget my outfit – the effort put into finding the perfect all-white ensemble fit for a queen was undoubtedly worth it.

As we look ahead, let it be known that next year, we’re claiming the award for Best Music Radio Presenter and Best Music Show. Can I get an amen?

Province 9/9

Hip, hip, hooray! My birthday month ushered in a fantastic gift – the opportunity to explore the 9th province in South Africa. I owe you a dedicated blog for this adventure, but let me give you a sneak peek into the charm of East London. Our journey began at Broadwalk Mall for lunch. While my colleagues opted for the typical mall experience, I sought out Hobie Beach in search of a restaurant with a view.

As fate would have it, I nearly fell victim to a photographer who snapped pictures of me and tried to sell them for R100. A playful banter ensued, resulting in a mini photoshoot on the Broadwalk walkway but thankfully, my colleague came to the rescue, capturing even more stunning images.

Next on our itinerary was the breathtakingly beautiful, Intle Lodge. I promise to dedicate a separate blog to fully capture the splendor of this place – the mesmerizing views, the infinity pool, the exhilarating game range, and, of course, the delicious food. It was three days of pure heaven. Hold me accountable to writing the blog.

Live performances in 2023

The Delta Experience with Msaki

The Delta experience with Msaki was profoundly heartwarming, especially considering the context surrounding her frustration with rumors about her personal life. That particular night felt like a healing journey for her, and the ripple effect extended to the entire audience. From her heartfelt storyline to the song choices and the palpable energy from the crowd, it was a night of emotional resonance.

At one point, my best friend and I found ourselves moved to tears, caught up in the raw authenticity of Msaki’s performance. It was more than just a concert; it was a shared moment of healing and connection through music.

Magic Music Sessions with Deborah Cox and Musiq Soulchild

Musiq Soulchild and Deborah Cox were in South Africa together. The experience was an absolute delight, although the biggest complaint of the night was the delayed start. Interestingly, the timing worked out perfectly for me, as I left the show just in time to head home and before I made my way to the concert.

Musiq Soulchild’s live performance was a treat for the senses, and he sounded even better in person. And he looks so good. The concert not only reaffirmed my appreciation for his known hits but also introduced me to new favorites, such as “Ahh Yeah” featuring Robert Glasper and Chrisette Michele. It would’ve been lovely to see the opening acts but the blend of musical, the electric atmosphere, and the discovery of fresh tracks made it an unforgettable night of soulful entertainment.

Trevor Noah Live in the Mzansiverse

A year ago, my sister surprised me with a fantastic gift – tickets to see Trevor Noah when he came to South Africa. I’m immensely grateful that she took the initiative to secure them in advance because they sold out in a flash.

On the big night, my mom joined us, turning it into a girls’ night out. Despite the show starting a bit late, it worked out perfectly. We had the chance to catch up, share laughs, and create our own jokes before Trevor took to the stage. I doubted that I would find Trevor funny but the laughter in the room was contagious, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying every moment of the evening. It turned out to be a great night.

Isibuko Album Launch

Following my conversation with Sjava on my radio show, we were fortunate to receive an invitation to the launch of his album at the State Theatre. The event took place a month after the album’s release, and it was remarkable to witness how passionately his fans already knew every word of the album.

The launch became a captivating experience as he articulated his healing journey through the music. It was a beautiful and immersive display of artistic expression, connecting with the audience on a profound level. Witnessing the synergy between the artist and his dedicated fans, who had embraced his music as a personal journey, added an extra layer of magic to the evening.

Maxwell at the Delicious Festival

I had an absolute blast at Maxwell’s performance at the Delicious Fest, and he truly embodied the essence of Gug’uThandandayo. Although there was something he said that upset some people, it went over my head until after the concert. Nonetheless, his passionate performance left me thoroughly entertained.

Maxwell poured his heart into his set, and the energy was infectious. Despite not performing “Women’s Worth,” a notable absence for some, it didn’t bother me in the least. The overall experience, the vibe, and the sheer joy of being part of the audience during his performance made it a memorable first experience at the Delicious Festival.

The Soundtrack to 2023

This year, my music journey, as reflected on YouTube and Apple Music, revealed a consistent thread; Spirit of Praise and Rum.Gold. The songs and artists that dominated my playlists didn’t come as a surprise.

The eclectic blend of Lo-Fi, Amapiano, and Gospel music served as a diverse yet harmonious soundtrack to my year, offering uplifting moments across different moods and experiences. The fusion of these genres added an enriching dimension to my musical journey.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You…

As I write this blog post, I realise there’s so much to be grateful for. I’ve embraced numerous “Dora The Explorer” moments, experiencing a range of firsts from a boat cruise to completing the Comrades Half Marathon in under 2:30 minutes. Hosting a grown and sexy R’n’B show, indulging in the tastiest vege bunny chow in Durban, and immersing myself in a Sip and Paint experience. Amidst these exciting milestones, my deepest gratitude is for my my health, recognizing that a healthy body, mind, and spirit form the bedrock of meaningful experiences.

Looking forward, my goal for the next year is to prioritize moments of rest and self-reflection. Acknowledging the importance of breaks for personal well-being, my aim is to strike a balance between ambitious pursuits and allowing goals to naturally unfold.

I’m also grateful those who have been part of this journey; my family, my man, my friends, and my Loves who listen to me on weekends and take time to read my blogs. I look forward to more shared adventures and growth in the upcoming year.

I love and appreciate you.
