After the last minute disappointment from the Flying Fish #FlavourOdyssey event last year, he finally made it to the South African shores. I got my ticket about 2 months before the event and it came to me as a surprise. I had forgotten about this event and made peace with seeing Masego later on in life. But I was also excited when I saw the invitation.
1 May 2019, we made our way to Sandton, Fourways for what seemed like a private event. I was so impressed that the event was a day event. The proposed time to start and end was 11am – 6pm. No supporting acts where advertised, so everyone besides Masego was a surprise. I got there early-ish, around 2pm and waited. And waited. And waited for my plus one, my cousin who was 20 minutes away every time I called her. I wanted to be angry but opted to listen to the music from outside until I saw one of my friend’s status update on WhatsApp. He was there as well so even if my cousin didn’t come I’d be okay, lol.

The Scenery
A big shout out and well done to Flying Fish for choosing this venue. It was intimate and airy. The set up was not so different from the previous event but the layout was better. The entrance had plenty of photo stations for photos and the Flying Fish promo ladies were visible and always ready to help take a picture or two. The bar area was an indoor bar with TV screens and all. They served the usual; soda, Flying Fish and Flying Fish cocktails. A walk around from the photo stations to the stage allowed you to appreciate the venue and the beautiful people and it was far enough that you didn’t really have to be among the crowd to enjoy the performances.

The people
There was something about this crowd that was chilled. Everyone looked pretty and we were there for the vibe and the show. One guy saw my nose stud peeking out of my nose and thought it was a bogger and went straight in to clean my nose. One minute I was talking to this guy, next thing he says “You’re too fly to have a bogger on your nose;” the slight embarrassment when he found out it was a nose ring. I also spotted a few faves; Valentine Madzhie, Slaying Goliath, Cedrick Ngaza, and Solar Itu just to name a few.

Shekinah
Remember my heartbreak over missing Shekinah’s performance at Ed Sheeran’s concert? I am convinced I am highly favored because to my and many people’s surprise, Shekinah opened up for Masego. Everything about her performance was what I imagined it to be. Her stage outfit, her band and she performed all my favourites. Which happen to be all the songs on her album. This performance was worth the wait and a beautiful way to usher in Masego.

And finally… Masego
Then the man of the moment came on stage after a while of changing a few stage props; there he was… Masego in the flesh.

Masego’s first song was actually a song we thought he would perform last because it’s the most popular song at the moment. The crowd heard the first melodies of Tadow feat. FKJ and went crazy. He started of the show on a high that we all enjoyed and were grateful for. Even though I know quite a lot of his jams, the songs after Tadow were an added bonus.

Masego’s outfit
First of all, he calls himself Uncle Sego on all social media and lived up to that name. Print jeans, print shirt, socks and push in’s. He literally dressed like that uncle at the family gathering who is moneyed and doesn’t mind showing people he is moneyed. I wouldn’t have imagined seeing him dressed any other way.

Surprise song
Towards the middle of his set, Masego showed of his musicality by composing and performing a song he later titled Yebo. That was such a beautiful treat. To watch him go from bass, tremble, background melody and then adding his saxophone live was a breath of fresh air. In between the latter, he kept singing Yebo and we sure as heck joined in. Last we checked he was going to compose this song in studio and perform it.

At 6pm, I was content. I was okay with vacating the premise and going back home after what was an amazing experience. We didn’t have a choice by the way; the guards started kicking us out at 6pm on the dot.
Was Masego worth the wait, heck yes!
And Flying Fish definitely brought on the flavour.
Again.
