The Basadi In Music Awards

In a beautiful turn of events in 2023, I found myself in the unexpected role of an award-nominated broadcaster, a journey that commenced with just two seasons on commercial radio. Being nominated for the Basadi In Music Awards has truly been an interesting journey, one filled with its share of highs and lows. But I’m grateful for it all, and I am excited to finally share this remarkable journey.

On the June 26th, a day that began like any other, a pivotal moment arose. Colleagues informed me that someone was seeking my contact information and inquired whether it could be shared. Recognizing the potential, I consented. Later that day I received a call from a courteous lady named Comfort, who revealed that she had persistently attempted to reach me via email, all in vain. I finally received the email, overwhelmed by emotions, tears welled up as I read the nomination letter. In the days that followed, I chose to confide in my closest confidants when I saw them in person.

The honor of being recognized by the Basadi In Music Awards is a testament to the power of determination and a reminder that the most astonishing victories often emerge from the unlikeliest of beginnings.

Announcement Day

I embraced the nomination and vowed to keep it under wraps until the official announcement. The big moment arrived through a live stream on YouTube. Before this, a task that I postponed demanded attention urgently– updating my PR images. I called my trusted glam squad, we convened for an early morning photoshoot on Sunday that would be one of the most cherished memories along this journey. The images surpassed even my highest expectations, but I digress.

My nomination was in the category of Entertainment Radio Producer of the Year for the POWER Experience. This heartening recognition was witnessed by many, including a colleague who came across the news on Metro FM’s Touchdown 326. The host of the show caught wind of the nomination, extending his congratulations to his producer and even mentioning my name. With the news out in the open, it was time to rally for votes.

Road to the Awards Night

I’ve held back from engaging in public voting campaigns because it requires You to request assistance. Such campaigns require You to get out of Your comfort zone, necessitating a vulnerable exposure of oneself. Another highlight of this journey was the unwavering support demonstrated by my family and friends. As soon as the campaign poster was available, they shared the message and shared snapshots of their votes. You know how they say Your biggest supporters are strangers, I got to witness those close to me be my biggest supporters. My father’s efforts extended to recruiting his students and friends for votes, while my best friend went the extra mile by creating a video tutorial for her mother, ensuring a heartwarming display of support.

The Attire Odyssey

I had a vision for my outfit. It would be a yellow SePedi-inspired dress fit for a Queen. The plans I had to make my own attire took a downward spiral, I found myself very busy with activities at work compounded by the challenge of load-shedding after work.

To add to the drama, I sought to include a Gele, a head tie worn primarily by women in Nigeria and West Africa, to the outfit only to encounter a scam on Facebook Marketplace. The outcome was far from what was promised. However, I stood my ground, refusing to be swindled. See below what I ordered (on the left) vs. what I was expected to pay for (on the right). You’re allowed to laugh.

The Grand Night Unveiled

And suddenly, the night was upon us – August 12, 2023. Amidst a busy week, a call from my partner made me realize that the awaited day had arrived. A morning jog followed by careful preparation for the show got me out of bed. After fulfilling my duties with the show, I hastened to the Joburg Theatre, managing to grace the red carpet’s final moments.

The theme was African Royalty, with sneakers. In the midst of the busy week, I managed to find fabric from my collection to create an alternative simple yet elegant outfit. While I typically favor heels, the incorporation of sneakers added an unexpected flair. My ensemble featured a captivating red two-piece print outfit adorned with gold accessories. With the Gele plan out the window, I embraced the afro look.

The Basadi in Music Awards showcased impeccable production, captivating every performance with a distinct ambiance. A delightful blend of old-school classics, Amapiano beats, and Afro Soul melodies immersed the audience in musical euphoria. Unathi was the perfect host, she graced the stage with an aura that perfectly complemented the event. Who can forget her very slow and sexy walks on and off stage? I honestly had such an amazing time with my plus one who made the night even more special by being there with me.

Key Lessons Embraced

We didn’t take the award and that sucked, a lot. We celebrated after the award ceremony and reflected on the journey, and what a beautiful journey. This journey reaffirmed that I am loved and supported. It also confirmed that the efforts invested in the POWER Experience had not gone unnoticed; we are inscribed in the stars. This is one of many moments that prove this.

Furthermore, the journey taught me that not everyone would stand by me, a lesson I wholeheartedly accepted. Redirecting my focus to those who celebrated with me reaffirmed my joy. If presented with the opportunity, would I embark on this journey again? Undoubtedly, I’d also ensure my original outfit’s completion because I was onto something.

I conveyed my profound gratitude to the voters, word-spreaders, and the Basadi In Music Awards organizers for the nomination on air. And again I say, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! POWER Experience is a force to be recocked with, poised to leave an indelible mark. Stay tuned for what lies ahead.
