A friend of mine went to Durban not so long ago and she came back with the horrific story of how her wig almost blow away with the wind. She was by the sea and it almost went with the tides. Another lady on Twitter shared a story of how her wig fell off while on baecation and her boyfriend laughed like he had never laughed before. Ahead of the holiday season, one of the things I’m stressing about is which hairstyle to go with. I’m traveling with a group to Durban in a few days and they will not let me forget if my wig slipped off and fell, so it’s worthwhile to check out what hair style will be best suited for any holiday, especially a holiday by the coast.
Braids
My default holiday (festive season) hairstyle is braids. I like how they last longer and they’re the easiest to maintain under any circumstance. If your hairline is sensitive, rather go with crochet braids, those are easy to install and if well taken care off, they’re also re-usable. My sister suggested the braids wig (aka Mama Jacky), but it’s a no from me. I’d like to get in the water and be sure I still have my hair intact when I get out.

Faux Locs
A trend I’m currently obsessed with, especially done with the Marley Braid hair extensions because it’s softer and lighter than the braids hair extensions. The Marley Braids extensions also gives an authentic look to the looks. The softness and lightness of the extension also allows you to have various hairdos and still maintain an ethnic look. They’re also very easy to dry should they get wet.

The Up-Do
If you want to give your hair a breather and do away with extensions; you could also comb it, add a bit of gel to protect the hair and tie it up in an up-do bun. For an a bit of volume to your bun, you could add an extension piece on top of your bun. The downside though, is the vitamin sea craving. You’ll have to wash, hair-dry and re-do this one after a swim.

The cornrows
There’s a whole variety of cornrow hairstyles you can experiment with for the perfect holiday hairstyle. From thick and few cornrows to thin and more lined cornrows. Just a side note, the thinner the cornrows, are more likely to last and be the easiest to maintain. But it goes back to personal preference on this one. But it’s a great protective hairstyle.

The doekIf and when all else fails, there’s the doek. Or this could even be your first option, it’s a great accessory for the summer (or any season for that matter); on and off the beach. A meter to 2 meters of fabric will give you the perfect doek. The more the fabric, the more variety you’ll have.

Short hair
Spring/summer is also a great time for the big chop if you’re been postponing this beautiful transition. It’s probably also the easiest to maintain and you’ll love the cool breeze that comes with having short hair when it’s hot.

And the hair I choose…
I haven’t had long braids in a while but I also wanted to be kind to the hairline so I choose this hairstyle; a combination of cornrows and braids. The trend this Spring/Summer is to add beads and hair jewelry in order to get a variety of looks. I toned down the beads for the short vacae, but I’ll probably add more on the braids when I come back.
What do you think of my choice of holiday hairstyle?
