Maftown Heights: Untold Stories Documentary

Remember that incredible era of SA hip hop? When every township and city had its own crew putting their flavour on the scene? Mahikeng was no exception – Morafe, Mo Molemi, HHP, Fifi Cooper – these artists released music that defined a generation. Their energy even inspired the creation of Maftown Heights, a concert series, or rather a movement that originally started in Johannesburg but later moved to Mahikeng to celebrate these local legends. It was a beautiful moment for South African hip hop, showcasing the power of homegrown talent.

Last night had the opportunity to attend a special screening of the “Maftown Heights: Untold Stories” documentary. It’s fantastic to see more focus on documenting South African artists’ journeys – their stories deserve to be heard! This documentary dives deep the stories we don’t know about, and I’m particularly curious about some things like: why was Maftown Heights founded in Johannesburg instead of Mahikeng? And what’s the story behind Morafe – did they actually break up, or is there more to it?

The screening wasn’t just a peek at the doccie, it was a whole experience. The night featured a panel discussion with some SA hip hop royalty. We’re talking Maftown Heights co-founders Refiloe Ramogase and Khuli Chana themselves, along with the legendary DJ Ms Cosmo, SA vlogger Fratpack, beatmaker extraordinaire and one-third of Morafe, Towdeemac (who also happens even sound designed the documentary), and the OG himself, JR. MC Kabelo Mabalane kept things moving, asking questions that dug deep into the first episode and left us buzzing with anticipation for the remaining three.

Confession: I feel in love with hip hop because of Maftown Heights. YFM, back in the day, played an instrumental role for that because they were the biggest supporters of the movement. Fast forward to 2024, artists like Maglera Doe Boy and Loatinova Pounds still carry the baton. Spolier, Maglera is also in the documentary.

Catch “Maftown Heights: Untold Stories” from this Saturday, June 15th at 4 PM on Channel O! Set your reminders, because this documentary is guaranteed to reignite your love for SA hip hop, like it did with me. Prepare to be reminded why South Africa’s scene is world-class, and get ready for a glimpse into the future – it’s looking seriously bright.
