Happy World Radio Day 2024

Today marks 100 years of radio under the theme “Radio: A century informing, entertaining and educating”.

I have the honour and the privilege of hosting POWER Experience on POWER 98.7, every Saturday from 2-6pm. When I took on the role as a host of POWER Experience, I was given two clear objectives. The first was to attract a younger audience, and the second was to enjoy what I do, which, frankly, was the easy part. Hosting the show for four hours is an absolute pleasure for me, and I eagerly anticipate every moment.

If you still haven’t listened to the show, where have you been my Love? Here are the three features we have.

Blast from the Past

“Blast from the Past” emerged as a vibrant attempt to bridge the gap between the current market and the audience I’m aiming for. In our show, we play around with two songs – one being the original and the other, a reimagined sample. Take, for instance, classics like Imagination’s “Music and Lights” and HHP’s “Music and Lights.” My mother, for example, can relate to the original, while I resonate with the reimagined version. Our purpose isn’t to compare the two, but rather to celebrate both, finding common ground in their unique renditions.

The Themed Experience

In this captivating feature, we treat our listeners to a fantastic 25 minutes of non-stop music, all centered around a specific theme. The theme can be as broad as celebrating icons like Brenda Fassie or Black Coffee, or as unique as crafting a theme from current events. One of the most intriguing themes was inspired by the bogus doctor, Matthew Lani. We delved into a collection of artists who carry the title “Dr,” although they aren’t necessarily medical doctors. Think of the likes of Dr Malinga, Dr Dre, and Dr Moruti. This musical experience unfolds in the final 25 minutes of our show, making it a truly memorable experience for all.

The Catch Up

This segment was born out of the desire to infuse fresh music into our playlist, and as we do that, we also get the fantastic opportunity to engage with the artists behind the music. Here are my top five so far:

DJ Sbu

Engaging in conversation with DJ Sbu proved to be both light-hearted and heartwarming. His openness in sharing past experiences and current endeavors was refreshing, instantly putting me at ease despite feeling a bit star-struck. From the moment we met, DJ Sbu created an atmosphere that allowed for a genuine and relaxed exchange. Podcast link: https://omny.fm/shows/power-podcasts/the-catch-up-with-dj-sbu

Skwatta Kamp

This conversation stirred a mix of nerves and awe within me. The thought of interviewing five individuals simultaneously, especially those I grew up listening to, felt unbelievable. Each of them have big personalities, and it made it a beautiful experience to delve into the origins of their journeys and witness the evolution that now includes Relo as an integral part of the group. The exchange was not just an interview; it felt like a conversation with friends. Podcast link: https://omny.fm/shows/power-podcasts/in-conversation-with-skwatta-kamp

Nomcebo Zikode

Welcoming the Grammy Award-winning Nomcebo Zikode onto the show was a delightful surprise. Anticipating a delayed response when approaching her team for an interview, I was instead met with a seamless confirmation that set the stage for a memorable conversation. Nomcebo arrived with her family, and her beautiful words about them added an extra layer of warmth to our interaction. We shared moments of dancing, laughter, and recorded content. In a fun twist, she even taught me how to do the Jerusalema dance, and my Instagram reel quickly gained traction, garnering over 100k views in a few hours and now standing at an impressive 400k views—underscoring the undeniable star power that Nomcebo has. Sjava

Sjava took a break from shooting the music video for “Isoka” to join the Catch Up. Despite his busy schedule, this turned out to be one of the longest and most effortless conversations on the show. We delved into his journey, touching on some emotional aspects. While the juiciest bits remained off-air, as with all the Catch Ups, the on-air conversation proved equally captivating, offering listeners a glimpse into Sjava’s world. Black Motion

Conducted amid the controversy surrounding the group’s split, I chose to shift the focus during the interview and allowed the members to introduce themselves. Keeping this in mind, Smol addressed the drama and provided insights into the reasons behind the split. Despite the challenging context, the conversation took a positive turn as they graciously shared a yet-to-be-released song and album, offering a refreshing and lovely reintroduction to their audience. Amidst all these incredible features, POWER Experience also keeps the vibe alive by playing a dynamic mix of old-school house music, kwaito, new-school R&B, hip-hop, amapiano, and occasionally, we’ll even delight you with traditional music. It’s this diverse blend that sets us apart, and that’s why we proudly claim the title of the best music show in South Africa.

See you on Saturday from the 2-6pm, right?
