Red Bull Symphonic – Kelvin Momo

On the 6th of June, something extraordinary happened at Monte Casino. It wasn’t your usual Amapiano party, nor was it a typical night at the theatre. It was a beautiful, bold experiment: The Redbull Symphonic with Kelvin Momo in collaboration with the Egoli Orchestra — a live orchestral interpretation of Momo’s signature sound, with a live orchestra.

From the moment we stepped into the venue, it was clear that this was going to be a different kind of night. The stage was dressed for something grand: string sections, brass instruments, and a sea of microphones stood alongside DJ decks and keyboards. Amapiano was about to trade the dancefloor for the concert hall, and it was lovely to witness.

Kelvin Momo has nine albums, with over 20 songs on each album. We all waited to see our favourites, but what are the chances with the massive catalog? Some of the artists who joined him included Thatohaci & Tracy, Mhaw Keys, Mashudu, Nia Pearl, Sino Msolo, Styx, and of course, Babalwa M. They all delivered performances that felt both tender and powerful. They also reminded us why they’re some of the most respected voices in the genre.

What struck me most was how naturally Kelvin’s songs blended with the classical elements. It didn’t feel forced. If anything, it revealed how much depth and musicality already exists within the genre. Kelvin Momo’s compositions, often described as spiritual, became even more transcendent.

Did I hear my favorite jams? I sure did. Inyembezi from his iconic album, Ivy League, Waze Wamuhle and Bo Gogo from Nstako, Amalobolo from Kurhula, from and he ended of the Song Cry.

If you ever doubted that Amapiano is a movement, an art form, and a global force in the making — Kelvin Momo Symphonic was your proof.
